Rib bruising. Large bruise caused by fractured ribs on an 80 year old woman. The ribs are easily fractured by a fall or a blow. Severe pain results, which becomes worse when breathing deeply. Most rib fractures do not result in mis- alignment of the bone ends, and heal easily without any treatment other than painkillers. If bone is displaced by the fracture there is a risk that a lung may be pierced, which can lead to collapse of the damaged lung. Fractures are very common in elderly women. After menopause the hormones which help give the bones strength are not produced,so even a light fall or blow can cause damage | |
