Healing wound (Second of two images). Open wound on the leg of an elderly woman healing after six weeks. The edges have started to close, and there is growth of pink scar tissue around the wound. Injuries like this one require rapid medical attention to prevent or minimise the risk of infection. In a large, flat wound like this, stitching is not generally possible, and natural healing must be allowed to take place. The area must be kept sterile at all times.
