Inguinal hernia. Front view of the groin of a 6- month-old premature baby boy with a bilateral inguinal hernia. A large bulge has distended the baby's groin so much that the genitals are not visible. An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the bowel bulges through the lower abdominal wall into the groin area. This type of hernia is most common in adult men, sometimes occurring due to physical straining or coughing. In this baby the hernia was a side effect to the steroid drug dexamethasone. The drug had been given as treatment for respiratory distress syndrome. Treatment involves surgery to push back the protruding organ | |
