Infected wound. Close-up of an infected haematoma around an open wound on the shin of a 38-year-old man. The patient had dropped a lump of concrete on his leg one month earlier. A haematoma is a localized collection of blood caused by bleeding from a ruptured blood vessel. Evidence of infection of the haematoma can be seen in the red, swollen and tender skin. Accumulating in the open wound (at centre) is pus (yellow) composed of destroyed tissue, microorganisms and dead infection-fighting white blood cells. Cleaning and dressing of the wound will be necessary. Antibiotics may be given to treat the infection | |
