Cut shin. Two cuts (lacerations) on the shin of an 80-year-old woman,sustained after she fell down the stairs. The skin has peeled back from both cuts. Bleeding can be seen both from the wounds and under the skin. The thinner and inelastic skin in elderly people makes lacerations such as these more likely. They will also be slower to heal which will increase the likelihood of infection. Such wounds should therefore be thoroughly cleansed and covered with a sterile dressing. The wounds may be stitched to close the skin and antibiotics may be given to prevent bacterial infection
