Infected wound. Close-up of an infected wound from a thorn in the knee of a 59-year-old man. The infection has caused the skin around the wound to become red and swollen. At the centre of the wound (yellow) is pus composed mostly of dead infection-fighting white blood cells. Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria are the most likely causes of this infection. Treatment is with appropriate antibiotic drugs
