Incisional hernia. View of a large swelling on the abdomen of an 85 year-old female patient, known as an incisional hernia. This hernia was caused by a weakness in the abdominal wall after the patient underwent a colostomy operation. A colostomy bag is seen attached to the patient. A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or tissue through a weak area of muscle that would normally contain it. In this case,a large amount of the intestines are bulging through the abdominal wall. Correction requires using mesh to strengthen the wall. A colostomy is the surgical removal of all or part of the colon. A colostomy bag collects waste during recovery | |
