Broken arm. Coloured X-ray of a compound fracture to the radius and ulna lower arm bones. At lower centre is the fracture site in which sharp broken ends have separated and may pierce the skin. The radius is the larger bone at right, aligned with the thumb of the hand (lower frame). The smaller ulna is at left. The humerus bone of the upper arm is at top. Most fractures are caused by sudden injury that exerts more force on the bone than it can withstand. X-rays confirm the diagnosis. A compound fracture may be repaired by surgery to realign and immobilize the bones (See photo M330/556 of this fracture fixed with steel pins) | |
