Broken arm. View of a woman's bruised arm due to a fracture of the humerus (upper arm bone). Bleeding from damaged blood capillaries has occurred under the skin to produce this black bruising. Soft tissues of the arm may have been damaged by the broken bone. Most fractures are caused by a sudden injury that exerts more force on the bone than it can withstand. Post-menopausal and elderly women are susceptible to bone fractures due to brittle bone disease (osteoporosis). Treatment of a broken arm includes realignment of the bone ends if these have separated, immobilization by a splint or steel pins, followed by rest | |
