Back injury. Liquid crystal thermogram of the torso of a male patient suffering back injury. The distribution of colours and their symmetrical patterns is the thermographic method used here to diagnose the injury. The affected area is first painted black, then a clear liquid (cholesteric) crystal solution is sprayed over. The crystals are affected by temperature variations of skin and tissue and change colour. Blue/green shows good blood flow; red/black shows cooler areas. The red/ black area shows assymetric patterning occurring in the lower back,to reveal lower back injury. The affected area is cooler.
