Chronic wound infection. Close-up of a chronically infected wound on the side of a patient's trunk, under the arm (top right). This is a surgical in- cision that split open and became infected. The surrounding tissue is inflamed and red,and yell- ow-green pus has collected in the cavity. This patient had received a sympathectomy,an operation where a nerve is cut via an incision in the armpit in order to improve poor blood flow in the arm. 5- 10% of surgical wounds become infected in spite of routine aseptic precautions during surgery. This infected wound was plugged with antibacterial foam and bandaged to allow healing. See M330/447 for the same wound with foam dressing in place | |
