A fractured femur (thigh-bone). The area involved is known as the neck of the femur. This fracture, also called broken hip,is very common in elderly people and is often associated with osteoporosis. In this condition the density of bones decreases making them more prone to fractures. If the bone ends are impacted the fracture heals naturally. In other cases a surgical treatment is carried out to realign the bone ends. The fracture of the neck may damage the blood supply to the head of the femur (white and round),which may cause the head to crumble. In this case the head of the femur is removed and replaced with an artificial joint | |
