Laxative abuse. Light micrograph of a section through the inflamed lining (mucosa) of the rectum due to laxative abuse (overuse). Laxatives are pharmaceutical drugs, often taken as a suppository, which facilitate evacuation of the bowel. They are prescribed for a number of medical conditions, including constipation. Laxatives may be abused by people with eating disorders,in the belief that evacuating the bowel will decrease their weight. This abuse can led to dehydration, bleeding of the rectum and permanent impairment of bowel function. Magnification unknown | |
