Silver poisoning. Light micrograph of a section through a glomerulus (blood filtrating structure) in kidney tissue in argyrism or argyria (poisoning with silver compounds). The condition results from prolonged exposure to,or ingestion of,silver salts. It produces grey-black staining of the skin and mucous membranes by deposition of silver. The abnormal black staining is probably due to silver deposits. It can result from workplace exposure or from excessive medicinal drug use. Treatment is generally cosmetic,as chelation therapy and other treatments are mostly unsuccessful. A permanent & irreversible metallic tinge results in the skin of patients with argyria.
