Allergy testing. Packet containing an allergy test kit. Blood samples are collected by pricking the finger and are sent to a laboratory for screening for sensitivity to three different allergens (substances that cause allergic reactions). The samples are analysed by the radioallergosorbent test (RAST),which looks for the presence of an antibody called IgE in the blood. IgE interacts with an allergen to cause the production of chemicals, for example histamine, that produce the symptoms of the allergy. Examples of the allergens that can be tested for include dust mites, cow's milk, pollen and nuts | |
