| Bee sting. Swelling round the eye due to a bee sting. Bee stings can cause pain,redness and swelling for up to 48 hours. This is due to sensitization of the immune system to bee venom on a previous occasion. The venom is recognised as a foreign substance and triggers an inappropriately vigorous inflammatory response,mediated by body substances such as histamine. This kind of hyper- sensitive reaction is called an anaphylactic response,the commonest type of allergic reaction.
