MODEL RELEASED. Nasal biopsy. A doctor holds a nostril expander and aims a long probe, during a nasal biopsy on a young woman. The patient suffers from allergic rhinitis (hay fever). A sample of nasal mucosa is taken from the inner nasal cavity. It is later examined microscopically for inflamed cells, and compared with previous biopsy samples. In this way,the effectiveness of hay fever treatments like topical nasal sprays are tested. Hay fever is an allergy caused by the body's immune system reacting to normally harmless substances such as dust or plant pollen. Photographed at the National Heart and Lung Inst- itute,London. The doctor is Dr Stephen Durham | |
