Filariasis control. A health worker in Brazil spraying a drain with Bacillus sphaericus bacteria to kill mosquito larvae. This method of biological control is used to destroy the mosquitoes which transmit filariasis. Filariasis is caused by parasitic worms spread by blood-sucking insects. The worms invade the lymphatic system producing larvae that spread around the body. Infection causes inflammation of lymph vessels & accumula- tion of fluid, which can lead to vast enlargement of parts of the body (elephantiasis). Spread of filariasis & other blood-borne infections such as malaria can be reduced by controlling mosquitoes with insecticides or biological methods | |
