Malaria control. Hand spraying of an insecticide onto a body of water,to eliminate malarial mosquitoes. The malaria parasite Plasmodium sp. spends part of its life-cycle in humans, and part in Anopheles sp. mosquitoes. The eradication of mosquitoes, during their larval stage in water,is one method used to control malaria. By killing the mosquitoes, the malarial parasite cannot be transported from one infected human to another. In the 1940s to 1960s,the insecticide DDT was used, which proved a highly dangerous pollutant. It was also found that mosquitoes developed a resistance to some insecticides. Malaria affects some 300 million people worldwide each year | |
