MODEL RELEASED. Varicose vein treatment. Bruised left leg (right) of a 49-year-old female patient one week after surgery to remove varicose veins. Varicose veins are veins that have become distended, lengthened and tortuous (centre left),because defective valves no longer prevent circulating blood from pooling downwards and stretching the vein wall. This woman had a minimally invasive surgical procedure where an incision is made at the ankle, and another at the groin, through which the veins are removed. Micro-incisions,some of which have become infected, are made in some veins in the legs to aid their removal. Bruising occurs when blood leaks into the surrounding tissues | |
