Verrucas. Close-up showing plantar warts, also known as verrucas on a patient's big toe. Plantar warts are hard,rough-surfaced areas on the toes or sole of the foot caused by a virus belonging to the papillomavirus group. The infection is usually acquired from contaminated floors in swimming pools and communal showers. Due to the pressure from the weight of the body plantar warts are usually flattened and may cause discomfort or pain when walking. Many plantar warts disappear spontaneously. They may be removed by cryosurgery, laser therapy or by applying patches containing salicylic acid | |
