Plantar warts. Close-up of a cluster of plantar warts (often called "verrucas",the Latin name for warts) on a patient's big toe. Plantar warts are common warts that occur on the feet and become flattened as a result of pressure. They are caused by infection with the contagious human papilloma virus, which is often picked up from contaminated floors in swimming pools and communal showers. The virus stimulates rapid skin growth, producing a harmless lump. Common warts are usually left to disappear spontaneously, but can be removed by freezing, surgery or special plasters if they persist or cause discomfort | |
