Gastric ulcer. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the human stomach, showing gastric ulceration. Stomach mucosa has developed an abnormal lattice-like appearance (pink) at the ulcer site. Around it (yellow) are normal cells of the surface epithelium which once covered and protected the lattice. These epithelial cells secrete mucus. Mucus protects the stomach lining from acid and digestive enzymes secreted by gland cells at the base of pits in the lattice. Without the mucus producing epithelium, digestive enzymes attack the stomach lining and create an ulcer. Magnification: x220 at 6x7cm size | |
