Diabetic ulcer. Close-up of the heel of a diabetic patient showing an infected ulcer. This "heelsore" is open and exuding pus. Skin ulcers occurring on the feet of diabetic patients are usually due to inadequate blood supply to,or drainage from,the limb. Atherosclerosis (obstructive arterial disease) is more common in diabetic patients. A poor blood supply may additionally slow the healing of an ulcer. Ulcers may also result from neuropathy,an abnormality of the peripheral nerve system that occurs in diabetes. In neuro- pathy the foot becomes insensitive and is prone to tissue damage and then ulceration,while the patient is often unaware that damage has occurred
