Gastric ulcer. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of gastric ulceration. At centre, the stomach mucosa has developed an abnormal lattice- like appearance at the ulcer site. Around it (yellow) are normal columnar cells of the surface epithelium which once covered and protected the lattice. These epithelial cells secrete mucous. Mucous protects the stomach lining from acid and digestive enzymes produced by specialized cells at the base of the pits in the lattice. Without the mucous producing epithelium, digestive enzymes attack the stomach lining and create this type of ulcer. Magnification: x160 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x240 at 4x5 inch size | |
