MODEL RELEASED. Trigger finger. 83-year-old woman with trigger finger,a condition arising when a sheath surrounding a tendon in the hand becomes irritated. The sheath swells up,pinching the tendon and preventing it from moving smoothly. Eventually,the sheath becomes so irritated the finger locks in position. The cause of this condition is unknown but people over 40 with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis are particularly at risk. Treatment involves rest,splinting,anti- inflammatories and/or steroid injections. Severe cases require surgery to release the tendon followed by physiotherapy | |
