Tinea capitis. Close-up of a ringworm lesion (medical name: tinea capitis) on the scalp of a man. Some hair has been lost at the site. Ringworm is a fungal infection on the surface of the skin,particularly affecting the scalp and feet. It is caused by various species of fungi including Microsporum,Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. Highly contagious,it is spread by direct contact. The ring-shaped lesions cause intense itching,patches of hair loss on the scalp and scaling of the skin. Althlete's foot (tinea pedis) is perhaps the most common form of ringworm,followed by tinea capitis,or ringworm of the scalp. Treatment is with topical anti-fungal agents
