Tinea unguium. Close-up of toenails infected with the fungus Trichophyton rubrum. This condition, also called onychomycosis,is caused by the same species of fungi that cause athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm of the scalp. Affected nails become thickened, distorted and turn yellow or white. Treatment consists of a course of griseofulvin tablets, which may have to be taken for up to two years. If this fails, surgical removal of the nails may be necessary | |
