They are made up of lymphoid tissue and form part of the lymphatic system which plays an important role in the body's defence against infections. Tonsillectomy was once a common childhood operation but it is now carried out only if a child suffers frequent and severe attacks of tonsillitis. Post-operative pain is common and may require analgesic drugs. Sore throat may persist for up two weeks after the operation and full recovery usually takes place within three weeks
