False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fungus that causes athlete's foot or ringworm growing through the surface scales of human skin. The fungus,Trichophyton interdigitalis, feeds on keratin, the protein found in skin & hair. The micrograph shows hyphae,or branching filaments,of the fungus. T. interdigitalis lives in the soil & on small furry animals such as voles. In humans,it particularly affects the feet (athlete's foot,or tinea pedis) & scalp (ringworm of the scalp,or tinea capitis). The infection is ring-shaped & causes intense itching; it is treated with antifungal agents. Magnification: x1200 at 35mm size. Pink tint. Ref.: MICROCOSMOS,figure 5.33,page 105 | |
