MODEL RELEASED. Shingles rash (red) on the back of a 72-year-old woman. Also known as herpes zoster,the scabbed healing lesions are seen here three weeks after the rash developed. This is a T12 distribution,associated with the spinal nerve from the T12 vertebral level of the spine (in the lower back). Shingles is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus which lies dormant in the nerves after causing chicken pox.
