Sinusitis. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a coronal section through the face of a 65 year old woman, showing sinusitis and a nasal polyp. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses (air spaces, black) located between and beneath the eyes in the facial bones. They connect with the nose. Here, the maxillary sinuses are affected. The sinus on the right (below orbit, centre right) is filled with brown mucus. This is caused by a blockage which does not allow the mucus to drain into the nose as normal. In the maxillary sinus at left,a nasal polyp (brown) is seen growing into the black air space. Polyps may be surgically removed if they are causing problems | |
