MODEL RELEASED. Shingles rash. View of the face of a 68 year-old man during an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A red rash has completely infected the patient's swollen eye at left and forehead. The rash will subsequently form blisters, teeming with viruses, which will dry and form crusts. This shingles rash is extremely painful and is due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves serving the face. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus: varicella-zoster. Dormant viruses survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by disease or old age | |
