MODEL RELEASED. Shingles rash. Third of three images. View of the face of an elderly male during the fifth day of an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A red rash has completely infected the patient's swollen left eye and forehead. The rash has formed yellow blisters, teeming with viruses, which are now drying and forming a dark crust. This rash is extremely painful & is due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves serving the face. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus: varicella-zoster. Dormant virus particles can survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by disease or old age. See images M260/156 & M260/157 for days 1 & 3 | |
