Shingles rash. Second of three images. View of the face of an elderly male during the third day of an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A red rash has completely infected the patient's swollen left eye and forehead. The rash is forming yellow blisters which are teeming with viruses. The forehead blisters are drying and crusting over. This rash is extremely painful & is due to Herpes infecting the sensory nerves serving the face. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus: varicella-zoster. Dormant viruses survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by disease or old age. See images M260/156: day 1 & M260/158: day 5 | |
