Scabies skin infection. View of red papules (lumps) on the skin due to scabies. Scabies is a skin infection caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. The female mite tunnels in the skin to lay eggs and the newly hatched mites pass from person to person by contact. The mite's burrows are tiny, grey scaly swellings on the skin; usually between the fingers and on the wrists & genitals. Later, reddish lumps may appear on the limbs and trunk. The infestation causes intense itching,particul- arly at night. Scratching results in the formation of scabs & sores. Treatment includes applying an insecticide lotion such as lindane (gamma benzene hexachloride) to affected areas | |
