Corkscrew hairs on the skin of a patient suffering from scurvy,a deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Scurvy is caused by a diet lacking in fresh fruit & vegetables which normally supply the daily requirements of vitamin C. Early symptoms include bleeding gums,followed by subcutaneous bleeding.
