Rickets. X-ray of the hand & wrist of a child suffering from rickets, the abnormal development of bone due to a dietary deficiency of vitamin D. Growth demands & a lack of this vitamin lead to undermineralisation of newly formed osteoid (bone matrix). Changes are apparent at the free ends (growth plates) of long bones,in this case at the ends of the forearm bones. Those parts of bone adjacent to the growth plates, the metaphyses, appear frayed & saucer-shaped. Thin, bony spurs (thorn-like) appear to enclose the uncalcified growth plates. Vitamin D deficiency in adults is termed osteomalacia | |
