Paronychia is inflammation and infection of the tissues surrounding the fingernail,characterised by a build-up of pus under the skin. It usually results from infection by bacteria,although a yeast such as Candida albicans can also be responsible. The affected area becomes extremely painful,and sensitive to the slightest touch. Generally such infections are treated with antibiotics,but in severe cases such as these,surgery is necessary to drain the area under sterile conditions
