Paronychia. Close-up of paronychia due to an ingrowing toenail on the big toe of a 21 year old man. The edge of the nail has pressed into the adjacent skin. This has caused the toe to become infected (paronychia). Pus (yellow) composed mostly of dead infection-fighting white blood cells is oozing from the infection site. Blood is also escaping from small vessels ruptured by the nail's growth. Inflammation of the whole area around the nail has occurred resulting in redness and swelling. Ingrowing toenails usually result from cutting the nails incorrectly, from wearing tight-fitting shoes, and from poor personal hygiene | |
