Paronychia infection. Incision and drainage of a pus abscess formed near the tip of a finger. The abscess formed as a result of paronychia,an infection of the skin fold which develops at the side of base of nails. Paronychia may be acute or chronic; the acute form is usually caused by bacteria and the chronic form by the yeast Candida albicans. This condition is most frequently seen in women, particularly those who have poor blood circulation and whose work involves frequent contact with water. It is treated with antifungal or antibiotic drugs; surgical drainage is necessary only if an abscess forms | |
