Polyps. Cross-section showing a part of the large intestine (colon) in which three polyps (red and round) were found. Polyps are benign growths that project, usually on a stalk, from the lining of any mucous membrane. Typical sites in which they are found are the nose, cervix, intestine and larynx. Polyps in the large intestine are usually symptomless and are often discovered when a barium X-ray examination is performed for some other reason. Some types of polyps may develop into malignant formations and are removed whether or not they are causing symptoms | |
