False-colour barium swallow X-ray revealing a pouch (semi-circular white mass) caused by a weakness in the muscle around the oesophagus. Barium swallow radiographs are used in the diagnosis of motility disorders that affect the oesophagus. The passage of a bolus of barium sulphate (barium meal) down the oesophagus & the swallowing reflex which propels it are identical to the mechanisms relating to a mouthful of food. blue tint | |
