Warty skin mole. Light micrograph of a section through a warty naevus,a type of skin mole. This pigmented naevus is produced by abnormal clustering of pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin. At right are loose cornified layers on the surface of the skin. These have become folded as the naevus is raised in a warty form. There are cornified areas within the dark pink epidermis also (centre right). There are clusters of melanocyte pigment cells within the pockets of dermal cells trapped in the epidermis. These dermal pigment cells form the naevus. Like other moles, naevi are harmless, but on rare occasions can become cancerous | |
