Strawberry mark. A strawberry mark on a baby's head. The bright red, raised swelling looks like a small strawberry. A strawberry mark is a type of birthmark (naevus) caused by an abnormal distribu- tion of blood vessels (haemangioma). Strawberry marks usually enlarge rapidly during the first few weeks after birth, causing distress but doing little harm. After the age of about six months the lump subsides. About 50% have disappeared by age five, and 90% have disappeared by age nine. Strawberry marks that cause problems, such as persistent bleeding or distress, can be removed by freezing or lasers | |
