Nappy rash. Baby girl suffering from nappy rash due to infection by the yeast Candida albicans. Nappy rash is most commonly due simply to contact with irritants such as ammonia in the faeces and urine. In this case the area appears red and raw and if neglected may become ulcerated. In candidal nappy rash (which is also very common),raised red spots or patches appear. The rash resembles psoriasis, hence its alternative name of nappy psoriasis. Both forms of nappy rash can usually be avoided by frequent nappy changing. Candidasis is the cause of a number of conditions, including oral and vaginal thrush. It is treated with antibiotics such as nystatin and clotrimazole | |
