Nappy rash. Baby girl suffering from severe nappy rash due to infection by the yeast Candida albicans. Nappy rash is most commonly due simply to contact with irritants such as ammonia in the faeces and urine, causing the area to become red and raw. In candidal nappy rash, however, the inflamed area also becomes infected with candida, causing raised red spots or patches appear. The rash resembles psoriasis, hence its alternative name of nappy psoriasis. Both forms of nappy rash can usually be avoided by frequent nappy changing. Candidasis is the cause of a number of conditions, including oral and vaginal thrush. It is treated with antibiotics such as nystatin & clotrimazole | |
