Gastric metaplasia in the duodenum,pill camera view. Metaplasia is a change of cell type in a region. Here,the normal epithelial cells of the duodenum,the first part of the small intestine,have been replaced (at left) by cells similar to those found lining the stomach. This is usually due to the stomach releasing excessive amounts of acid into the duodenum. This occurs to prevent acid damage to the underlying tissues,as stomach lining cells are resistant to its effects. A pill camera is a pill-sized camera that is swallowed to image the digestive tract
