Malaria-infected erythrocytes. Transmission electron micrograph of a section through erythrocytes (red blood cells) infected with the malaria parasite. Malaria is a tropical mosquito-transmitted disease characterized by chills and fever. It is caused by the Plasmodium protozoan. This parasite replicates asexually through a series of stages in the erythrocytes of humans. Here,most of the parasites (grey,round) are in the first "ring" stage in the erythrocytes (dark,variously shaped). This stage is characterized by the typical "signet ring" shape (seen most clearly at upper centre and at bottom). Magnification: x7,500 at 10x8 inch size
