German measles. Arm of a 29-year-old woman showing rash due to German measles. German measles,or rubella,is a viral disease mostly affecting children. It causes mild symptoms including a light rash (seen here as small pink spots) that lasts several days. Infected adults may have more serious symptoms including fever and headache. The disease is most serious, however,if a woman is infected during the early months of pregnancy. If the virus is passed to the foetus the baby may be born with severe abnormalities such as deafness and heart disease. Rubella is prevented by vaccination, which is given to babies in the triple MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine | |
